Full description
The Florida Keys sit beside something unique: the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S., which runs a few miles off Key West's shoreline. This half-day trip gets you out to it without needing a dive certification or your own boat. All you need is the ability to swim and an interest in what lives under the surface.
Often among the first boats at the reef; seas tend to be calmer early
The trip starts on a modern 65-foot catamaran with plenty of space to spread out. You'll find a large seated sundeck up front, a shaded lounge for anyone avoiding the sun, and restrooms on board. Sodas and water are unlimited from the moment you board. On the sail out, the crew fits everyone's gear and covers the basics: how to clear your mask, breathe calmly through the snorkel and move around the reef without touching it.
When the boat ties up at the reef, you walk down the stern stairway and float straight onto the site. That's much easier for first-timers and older guests than jumping off the side. You'll usually have about 30 to 60 minutes in the water. Typical sightings include yellowtail snapper, blue tangs, sergeant majors and parrotfish crunching on coral. You may also spot purple sea fans, brain coral and, if you're lucky, a nurse shark or sea turtle. The captain chooses the exact reef site each day based on wind, current and visibility, so you're taken to wherever the conditions are best.
After everyone is back on board and rinsed off, the bar opens for beer, wine and your departure's signature drink. Alcohol is only served after snorkeling, for safety. On the sunset trip, the timing works out so you're cruising home just as the sky changes color.

- Parking near the marina is mostly paid street spaces, lots and garages, so allow extra time or walk over if you're staying downtown.
- You must be able to swim. Gear and instruction are provided, but they don't replace basic swimming ability. Guests who can't swim aren't permitted to snorkel.
- Waivers are required. Every guest must sign a liability waiver before the trip, and the standard cancellation policy still applies. Guests under 18 need a chaperone (18+) with valid ID at check-in to sign for them. Guests 14 and under must have that chaperone with them for the whole tour. Everyone needs a ticket.
- Bring a photo ID. A passport or government-issued ID is required, and a copy is accepted. Alcohol is served only to guests 21 and over with picture ID.
- The trip isn't wheelchair accessible.
- Times are approximate. Snorkel time usually runs 30 to 60 minutes, and the reef site depends on the weather and the captain's call. The sunset departure is seasonal.
- Protect the reef. Use reef-safe sunscreen, and never stand on or touch coral. Even a light brush can damage living polyps that take years to grow back.
- Bring a wetsuit in winter. The water feels noticeably cooler from December through March, so consider renting a wetsuit then, or bring a rash guard any time of year for sun protection.
- Get your mask ready before you go. Defog your mask before getting in, and if you're prone to seasickness, take medication about an hour before boarding.
