Full description
Most visitors to Key West see the water from Duval Street or a beach chair. This eco tour takes you out where the island's wildlife actually lives: the calm, turquoise flats and channels of the backcountry, a stretch of mangrove islands and shallow reefs that many travelers never reach.
Your captain heads out toward the areas where the local dolphin population feeds and socializes. These bottlenose dolphins are year-round residents rather than migrants, so experienced captains know their habits well, and sightings happen on the vast majority of trips. You might see a mother and calf surfacing together, a pod working a school of fish, or a curious dolphin riding the boat's wake.
This is a watch-only experience. The dolphins are wild and protected, so there's no swimming with, feeding or touching them. The boat follows responsible wildlife-viewing practices: it keeps a safe distance, limits time spent near any one group and lets the dolphins decide how close they come. Along the way, your guides explain what you're seeing. They'll cover how dolphins hunt cooperatively, why they surface the way they do, and how the shallow seagrass and mangrove ecosystem supports them.
Next, the catamaran moves to a sheltered snorkel site within a protected wildlife refuge west of Key West. While you cruise there, the crew walks everyone through gear fitting, breathing through a snorkel, clearing your mask and reef-friendly etiquette, so nervous first-timers feel ready before they get wet.
The water here is shallow and usually calm, which makes it a gentle introduction to snorkeling. Look for southern stingrays resting on the sand, purple sea fans swaying with the current, sea rods, sponges, isolated coral heads and darting juvenile fish using the reef as a nursery. On clear days, visibility can be excellent, though conditions vary with wind and tide.
Once you're back on board, you can rinse off with fresh water, grab a towel you brought along, and settle in with a cold drink. Beer and wine are poured only after snorkeling for safety reasons. Morning and afternoon trips are a great choice for the best light underwater. From March through August, a sunset departure adds champagne and front-row views of the sun dropping over the Gulf.

- There are public restrooms near the check-in area. There's no dedicated parking, so plan to use street parking, a paid lot or a nearby garage. Parking downtown fills up quickly, so give yourself extra time.
- You must know how to swim to snorkel. Gear and flotation vests are provided, but they don't replace basic swimming ability. Non-swimmers can still join for the dolphin watching and stay on board.
- Dolphin sightings aren't guaranteed. They're very common because the dolphins live here year-round, but they're still wild animals.
- Waivers are required. Every guest must sign a liability waiver before boarding. Guests under 18 need a parent, guardian or chaperone (18+) with valid ID present at check-in to sign for them. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by that adult for the entire trip. Every guest, including children, needs a ticket.
- Alcohol rules: Drinks are served only to guests 21+ with photo ID, and only after snorkeling. Anyone who arrives under the influence or carrying alcohol may be kept out of the water, turned away or asked to reschedule. Tickets aren't refunded in that case.
- The trip isn't wheelchair accessible. It's also not recommended for anyone who can't swim and wants to snorkel.
- Weather and water conditions vary. Wind, waves, clouds and underwater visibility change day to day. If conditions are a concern, the crew will announce it before departure. The standard cancellation policy applies.
- Sun exposure is real out there. Shade is limited, so wear reef-safe sunscreen and a hat or sun shirt. Regular sunscreen with oxybenzone or octinoxate harms coral.
- Sunset departures run seasonally from March to August.
- What to bring: swimsuit (wear it under your clothes), towel, government-issued photo ID (a copy is accepted), a credit card or cash, a camera, snacks, a refillable water bottle and sun-protective clothing.
- A tip for first-timers: If you get seasick easily, take motion-sickness medication before boarding and sit near the middle of the catamaran. Defog your mask with the provided solution, or a little baby shampoo, before getting in. It makes a big difference underwater.
